Corn head grease

I bought “0” grease from a tractor supply that’s brown!

Big Hammer, I went out to check again and it is dark brown. You are right. Would have helped if I turned on the light. LOL!

So, is the consensus that Cotton Picker and Corn Head grease are similar.

Did you know the grease used in front wheel drive CV joints is much the same stuff? It flows to all parts of the joint but doesn't leak if a boot gets torn. It will get flung out through a split in a boot at speed, but what splatters on the frame and suspension stays there; it doesn't drip on the ground.

You learn something new everyday. Thanks.

Isn’t “00” grease the same as corn head grease? “00” is available many places here in central Texas.

Before we get carried away with this Holy Grail of U-joint/ steering gear grease, please note that JD Cornhead Grease is a urea based lubricant that is rated as not compatible with petroleum based lubricants. So, it sounds like one needs to purge the subject castings to remove one type before adding the other?

i totally agree. in the steering box that has been washed out of all the old oil or grease you will be fine. but in the u-joint clamshell that grease will be mixing with gear oil from the ******, who know what it will turn into.

NO

cornhead grease is thixotropic (i don't know how to spell that) which means it becomes runny because of friction or worked (not heat) and then it will return back to a stiff state once everything stops moving. this give it the ability to lubricate moving parts and then stiffen up once things stop and it is less likely to leak out of unsealed bushings or loose mating surfaces.

I've just returned from a 1,000 miles rally and as we drove through one small country town, I spotted a John Deere dealer. I asked for Cornhead grease and lo and behold, he had some. I bought 4 tubes.
Completing a drive of that length with no issues is always a good feeling but this tie, it's better than usual because I now have some grease.
