Copper Head Gasket Install

What is the proper procedure on installing copper head gaskets? I have read previous posts saying to spray and some say just put on dry. If you do spray, what do you use? Thanks

Pioneer has the correct spray adhesive for installing the "copper" head gaskets.

We've used this on all the Flathead builds on the copper head gasket platform with not a single issue.

The part number on the "Copper Gasket Cement" is T-4000. The green Ford paint is T-18.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. I placed a shot of the spray can here, they also have the right "green" color spray paint for the Flatheads, also shown in the photo.

Hi Frederic, Pioneer Inc. is a large supplier to the engine building business in general.

They carry a decent line of materials for this industry. Anyone in the engine business can vouch for them, have been around for years now! Began back in 1946 or so?? In 1979 the business was purchased by "The Barnes Group" out of Bristol, CT.

You can contact them via the website (www.pioneerautoinc.com) or over the phone, customer service #800-821-2302

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. The main offices are located in Meridian, MS. We've never really gotten a single "bad" product from them and have dealt with them for over 40 years now.

I only slather grease as sealer on all surfaces for both composition and copper laminates. Also cleaner and easier to take apart.

I use the same technique as Jack, a smear of grease on both faces. Reason being, it allows surfaces to move whilst torquing down the head, any excess that squeezes into the cylinders or water jackets causes no harm, and allows easy removal of head and gasket in the future. Brian

I use copper coat on the head, block and both side of the gaskets and let dry till maybe a little more than tacky. After installing the head and torquing down, let engine set for a day before starting which IMO lets the copper coat dry and fully adhere. Years ago we would start race car engines after installation to warm up and retorque and had leakage problems which I believe was caused by not letting the sealer dry properly.
