Cooling

Hey guys, I have a 5.0 in my 54, with a after market aluminum radiator with a/c condenser in front of it. Cools fine as long as moving but temp starts to rise in stop and go traffic running the a/c. I had to trim the hood latch/grill support to install the condenser. This will require more work in order to mount a pusher fan. More to come once I actually start working on the install. I need to get a couple of small projects out of the way first. Have any of you done this already?

I'm also running a 5.0 in my '54. I'm using a stock '93 Mustang radiator with a 3000 cfm puller fan. No A/C but I can sit in traffic all day, in 100* heat and it stays at 195*. In my experience, pusher fans don't work well. You need a puller fan. However, in order to do that, I had to perform surgery on the core support and move the rad and puller fan assembly several inches forward to clear the motor. Kind of a pain but well worth it! There's some pics in my build thread about 3/4 of the way down the 1st page.
Hope this helps!

I have decided that I need to upgrade my radiator.

The new one is from Champion and is for a 54 Customline. I ordered it from Jegs with free shipping. In my case modifications to the car will be necessary.

While I had the radiator out I wanted to address a slow water leak that I couldn't pin point. I pulled the water pump and the timing cover to replace the gaskets. I found this area on the timing cover by the yellow mark and chose to replace it.

I also replaced the harmonic balancer.
When I placed the new radiator in place to check the fit, I saw that the radiator had to sit down lower. The transmission cooler fitting were in line with the crank pully.

To get the radiator lower the "U" shaped radiator support had to come out as well as the stabilizer mount below it.

As you can also see in the picture above the crossmember also had to be knoched to allow the radiator to drop even more.

Jeff, I always appreciate your input. My car was a v8. That radiator looks to be close to the Champion 5456 I have. I have cut and removed enough from the valance to move my a/c condenser and radiator forward enough to use my mechanical fan.

I'm working on modifying the bracket that supports the hood lock support and the center grill.

I engineer with the trial by error method.

I cut the bottom of the bracket off, it needs to move some as it is located in the picture. I also need to add some metal to make the length of the bracket a little longer about a 1/2 to 3/4 in.

This is the finished bracket, it will get paint.

This has been removed near the white mark, but leaving the forward hole for location of the bracket above.

This bracket has also moved forward.

I know I'm slow to update but I have to relearn how to post my pictures each time.
I have the radiator and condenser mounted and plumbed back in.
The hood latch support and latches are painted and back in.
I still need to pull a vacuum on the a/c and recharge it. I get back to that after I find the correct o-ring for the transmission dipstick tube to stop that leak.

O yea I still need to build a 2 piece fan shroud so I don't need to pull the fan to get it on.

Yep, I see 'em too! Good job! Please post a step-by-step tutorial on how to post pics here, as I've never been able to do it and you're the first one I've seen that has!

Hey Guys, My wife and I along with our daughter and son-in-law took off last week on a camping trip. No tents involved. I'm just getting back to my picture issue.

About posting pictures, I'm not sure if I can explain why the pictures in my cooling post showed up. As far as explaining how to post pictures The-Sting nailed it with his step by step post. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

I had started a album for the pictures for this project and added to it as I went along. After I read The-Sting's post I questioned how I posted the pictures in my cooling post. I posted my picture test to see if I could get the pictures to show. I posted two pictures. One I followed The-Stings instructions. I went to my album, selected the picture, right clicked it and selected (copy link) went back to the post and pasted. For the second picture I followed the same procedure except I selected (copy image) not copy link. In that post both picture showed.

I think the real reason my pictures didn't show in my cooing post is, when I setup the album I marked it as private. I didn't think that would affect coping pictures. I changed the album to public before I went out of town. That didn't seam to have any effect right then, but today when checked the post I saw that ya'll were able to see the pictures. Maybe there was a delay for the changed in the album status to take place.

Sorry this is so long winded, maybe you can make sense of it.

Orangedog I love how you're tackling the radiator and condenser issue. I have my radiator as far forward as I can which leaves no room for a condenser. I was planning on attempting pretty much everything youve done. Have you gotten your hood latch to work. I ordered a little shorter condens6tontry to not mess with the mechanism. I will say a note on an electric fan. I love my puller. Keeps the car cooler and if you ever have to reach into the engine bay with the car on you don't have to worry about losing an arm lol.
