cooler running

The following are used with varying degrees of approval:

The one I personally use: Hyper-Lube Super Coolant http://www.hyperlube.com/Super-Coolant-c8.html

I think the general consensus is that, although few can actually swear they've had an improvement with any of them, at their low price they can't really hurt anything and might help so we put them in.

There are a whole lot better ways to improve cooling than just adding an additive:

1. Reduce antifreeze to bare minimum levels needed (best not to run totally without it, even in the summer.)

2. Clean calcium deposits from inside of engine and radiator with vinegar or commercial radiator cleaner such as Prestone Super Radiator Cleaner. http://www.prestone.com/products/print/379?popup=1

3. The radiator itself may be beyond mere flushing and may need rodded out or the core replaced.

4. Increase water flow with higher efficiency water pumps and/or higher volume thermostats (or just take the stats out in the summer.)

5. Use distilled or deminerlized water rather than just hard tap water.

6. Increase air flow through the radiator with higher efficiency fan and/or fan shroud.

Just to name a few.

I have had noticeable temp drop with Royal Purple. In fact I've stopped using it because my temp was too low. Redline is a top notch product too.

I have tried the above products and never noticed any discernible difference in temp. If you have overheat problems it is more likely one of the problems noted above by old Henry. There are no miracles in cans..

The EPA has made the retail radiator cleaner, next to useless. Fill your system with vinegar and run it for a few days. It is not a threat to the environment either.
MIKE :)

Use white vinegar unless you also put in a tomato and some lettuce, then I'd say Balsamic might be best. :D

Ford38v8,do you use can or fresh tomatoes, plus do you use fresh or wilted lettuce? Do you put the lettuce and tomatoes in first or the vinegar? Thanks Epw

I have done some testing of Purple Ice and Water Wetter on the dyno with a closed cooling system similar to your car. Using the same loads and speeds with the same airflow volume and pressure there were no measurable differences between straight water and water with additives. This does not mean that different conditions, such as engine/car combinations, coolant mixtures, etc. will provide similar data. But, it does mean I lean toward the "they won't hurt" conclusion rather than "they are important components for cooling your Flathead".

I have tested Purple Ice many times and can tell you for sure it does make a differance. Take a laser pointed thermometer, get the engine up to a hot stable temperarure and check the temperature in the center of the heads between the spark plugs and at the rear of the heads. There are two visible hot spots you can see, how many other you can't see is a question. These are caused by small bubbles that form in very hot areas and coat the surface preventing the coolant from comming in contact with the surface. This occurs in most deisel engines and warrantee is void if a product like P.I. is not used. The oxygen in the bubbles make pin holes in the cylinders. This cost a lot of Ford deisel owners over $10,000 dollars. Recrord the temperarures you took and restart the cool engine with TWO bottles of P.I. installed. One bottle is not enough for old Fords. After it warms up take temperatures at the same spots as before every five minutes recording them. When it gets near the hot condition the temperature will sit there for about 10 minutes and slowly start to decline. This test is run at a fast idle with a house hold fan touching the front center of the grill. I don't think plain water cools as good as 2 bottles of P.I.and 2 gallons of perminate anti freeze. Thousands of people running Skips pumps following his instructions have found GREAT improvements in their cooling problems as indicated by the many posts on this and other forums. G,N,

You may have deposits on the top of the core ,Revers flush it ,any motor started new can flak of scale from inside the block .Best you run stockings for its first 100 or two . put a back valve or catch header tank on it .and all of the above ,shroud ,Get a professional clean .

Heres a attempt to cool a stock car ,the Hedda tank has expanded ,Wouldn't want to be in the drivers seat

Silly boy. You have to blend all of those ingredients (fresh or canned - don't matter) in a blender to make the "Coolant Cocktail" before pouring it into the radiator.

Old Henry,I was being silly, but my point is if the radiator, block are clean, and the water pumps are good, and the fan is turning, and radiator hoses are not collapsed. Why would you need tomatoes, lettuce or any additive to stay cool.EPW

Like you, I have never noticed a difference. However, I have only tested engines I have rebuilt properly. That is, they have been CLEANED internally quite well.
Perhaps this stuff helps more in engines that have ailments... aka , a "band-aid' approach vs. a true repair of the underlying problem.

G.M., While I believe Skip does great work I have yet to note any difference in operating temperatures on engines where I have installed his pumps.
Perhaps it is because I do not add the pressurized cap 'system'? Perhaps it is because my engines are properly rebuilt (cleaned internally) thereby negating any supposed benefit of the pumps?

Hey Kube, want to buy some snake oil LOL ken ct.:)

Your unlike ALL of the others that have solved their cooling problems with ONLY the addition of Skips pumps. Some have solved their problem with only the 3 lb valve. Read the posts, it's what they say from the results they have received. It sure irritates a few that can't stand to see an honest reliable vendor or rebuilder serve and help thousands of old Ford owners and make a living at it for 18 years. G.M.

Aw, now George, you're sounding like the vendors who say "you're the first one who has a problem like that!"
