Coolant Seepage

Hi Guys,

Noticed something on my car this afternoon during my pre-flight before going out for a ride.

There appeared to be some coolant seeping out but couldn't really tell where it was coming from, not a lot, just some drips.....it looked like it started somewhere around the water pump.

I wiped it up with a towel and took off for our ride, drove about 20 miles and stopped, checked if it had seeped out again and all was dry, drove home and it was still ok.

Started checking it about every hour and didn't notice anything until about 4 hours after we returned.

Also, I think I can see where it started, see the first pic, it then drips all the way down the side of the motor, you can see the drip marks.

Is this something I should be concerned about....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Coolest Seapage

Also, it looks like there is a separation there but it is just the way the light is reflecting off of it.....everything is tight and flush

Check the front side of the coolant neck to see if it is coming from the rubber pipe. It is either from there or the base of the coolant pipe to head or water pump to head. All three areas are easily fixed. Some really old coolant necks are rusted under the rubber pipe, get rough and pitted then leak a bit. They can be smoothed out and gasket cement applied to fill the area before the rubber pipe is reconnected or there are new castings one can buy from the vendors.
The pump to head area gasket and the coolant neck to head area gasket can be replaced if necessary.

Upper radiator hose clamps?

I think that may be it, just went out to the garage to check and there is seepage coming from where the hose is connected.....I'll work on tightening it or replacing it tomorrow.....thanks.

Question though....why would it take 4 hours after shutting her down for it to start seeping?

Nick

All the parts concerned, rubber hose, coolant neck and clamp all expand and contract as the coolant goes from ambient temperature to just at boiling while the engine is running and as they change size and wear over the years do not fit together as well as they did when new. There must be a point as the fluid cools that something no longer matches as it should.

Will I be able to get the right hose and clamps from NAPA or do I need to order from Snyder's

Do the easy fix first - Hose & clamps but your first photo looks to me it's leaking betweent the water outlet and head. Have you checked the torque on those two bolts? Reason I asked, is I had a similar leak and retorquing the bolts solved the problem.

Thanks, after the guys suggested the hose I checked and coolant was definitely seeping from both ends of the hose, new hose should be here tomorrow, if that doesn't work checking the bolts at the water outlet and head will be next.
