Cool 312 in Hot Rod

BUBBAS IGNITION

Well-known member
A friends new build . A 26 T Roadster pickup with Y Block 312 and a Model A frame.
We built the ignition using a stock Ford Mechanical advance unit and removed the Vacuum unit, belt sanded the mount off, brazed the advance plate and installed in the car. Great little unit with full mechanical advance only!
Construction by Culbertsons Custom Indianapolis Indiana.

Bubba, what was the reason for removing the vacuum advance? I always thought it was beneficial for street use?

Probably the biggest reason is Strombergs are not ported for vacuum advance (there were a few were but they're rare). You would have to use manifold vacuum for the advance.

Mainly removed for clearance with 3 carb manifold and firewall. A properly set vac unit can give ya 2-3 mpg but not with a race camshaft and three carbs..

Bubba, when you remove the vac advance, do you need to faze the rotor, or just lock down the breaker plate?
