Converting to a Hydraulic Throw Out Bearings

I have a 49 Merc flat head with a 3 speed and overdrive I am try out figure out how to use in a Studebaker truck project on an S 10 chassis. The cab is bare so I don't have any pedal assemblies or linkages and I do not have the throw out bearing or yoke for the trans. I'm looking for options and considering going to an automatic trans or some option that allows me to eliminate the mechanical clutch linkage, possibly a T-5 conversion with a hydraulic throw out , of if there is a hydraulic throw out conversion for the 49 transmission. Dose anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

Thanks

I would suggest a brake parts catalog with pictures and descriptions.
Pick a master and slave combination that you can work with for mounting and function.

Ehlien,
Sounds like an interesting project, but this forum may not provide the answers you are looking for.
Ford Barn is aimed more towards nearly stock Ford vehicles and generally we don't get too far into the custom builds.

Do not know if this will get kicked out as it is not Ford specifically related but here goes anyway. If you do post on the HAMB, do an intro first and you will need a tough skin - some of the guys can be pretty cutting but the knowledge and info these guys have far out weights the amount of bandages you might need if you do post ... :)

That all being said, I do believe Speedway, among other places, has a unit for an S10 T5 and they specify what master to use for it. Since you are using an S10 chassis, you might want to source the original pedal setup as that may simplify things.

I am going to use a hydraulic t-out bearing on a Buick Nail(not flat)head and a T5Z ****** setup in a 32 5-window. I am using a Cornhuskers adapter and hope to run the cables out through the mechanical linkage hole in the adapter to an aftermarket pedal setup specific for a hydraulic t-out bearing and my 32 frame. I just do not have the room for a mechanical linkage what with the starter, exhaust, and pedal setup all on the driver's side.

Regardless of the engine, I see no reason why an S10 T5 and hydraulic t-out bearing would not work well as long as the parts match up to one another. You may even be able to adapt the stock pedal setup and have more adjustment possible with the hydraulic setup vs the mechanical which can be an issue at times.

Good luck and keep all of us posted on your project ....

I agree! I'm running that combination with a T5. I heard there were problems with the hydraulic units leaking and then everything needs to pulled apart to replace it. This is just what I heard, so I went with the slave and master set-up.

If you have a lever that sticks out of bell housing they sell a push pull slave cylinder.
I have a friend with 47 Studebaker put a MII frontend and will be using a s10 truck rear end.

You asked for thoughts.......and respectfully, it sounds like you're in this project way over your head if you can't even make a definitive transmission choice at this point, and all this seemingly based on some confusion at the least, or the total inability to design and fabricate a reasonably simple clutch actuating method. It's your project, but it would be so much easier (and cheaper) to use a Chevy in that thing and sell the Merc to help-along someone else's Ford-like project. DD

Coop thanks for the comments and I appreciate your opinions. Will all due respect a small block would not do this project justice and the flat head was a well thought out choice. Not my first rodeo and I could/will figure it all out myself but I always appreciate the input of those more experienced than myself and willing to share. The interaction is one of the most enjoyable things about working on any project. Thanks again.

Thanks much I'll check that out.

Great couple posts. Looking at the trans and currently available components and thinking about it more I could probably fabricate a unique throw out bearing assembly. It would be supper sweet and smooth but would take some time , possible precision machining and $$$ so I pretty much gave up on that option. Then I was looking at the slave cylinder option which I think could be done by altering the decoupling shaft to get better leverage and fabing a custom bracket on the trans casing to mount the slave. Then it occurred to me the simplest solution would be to just go with a cable release system. Pretty simple and cheap and there is actually a similar system available for older Mustangs from Ford Racing. Anyway thanks for all the input and I'll post the final results and possibly some pics for anyone interested. Sorry for the lenghty reply!!

On the cable setup, do some research. The Ford motorsport (and most other) aftermarket cable stretch and need constant adjustment. There are a couple of good cables on the market or a stock original mustang cable.
