I converted my 55 f-100 to 12 volts about 6 years ago .I used an E- Z 21 circuit wiring harness .It was so simple a caveman could have done it .Used a one wire alternator and electroinc ignition and proper coil .Also installed 12 volt starter .Replaced all gauges with 12 volt repop ones . Wipers are also 12 volt as is heater motor .Best thing I did .JMO

despite the 6v / 12v debate, i need your input on what parts i am looking to get to convert my 39 engine/chassis to 12v. I will be rewiring the ole gal while in the process. Below is what i am looking at. Any other items that i will need?

you did say you wanted input ...

wiring:
vintage hot rod wiring kit
, sacramento vintage ford,

or

highway 15 nostalgia custom/street rod wiring kit, american autowire

if your present wiring is bad , worn in two or damaged then the harness is not a bad idea...i

alternator:
powergen 1939-48 flathead ford alternators, 12 volt, speedway

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/powergen-1939-48-flathead-ford-alternators-12-volt,4042.html

assuming you are not running air conditioning etc on the 39 , i can ever see the use for a alternator. The generator moved this country for years and thinking the generator will supply 25-30 amps very well i wouldnt buy a alternator. The only change needed is the voltage regulator to 12 volts the generator doesnt really know the difference nad will charge very well at 12 volts. May need to have it freshened up a bit with a local rebuild. Save the money..

Distributor
2572101 - mallory '32-'41 flathead 3-bolt dual point distributor, speedway
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/mallory-1932-41-flathead-3-bolt-dual-point-distributor,7967.html

i work on these very day and theres nothing this unit will do that your old distributor cant do. The factory units set up work very well.even if you purchase the unit it will need set up for your engine....

coil
40001 - pertronix flame thrower 1.5 ohm coil - chrome, speedway
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/pertronix-flame-thrower-coil-chrome,411.html

i would suggest a good quality (us made) ignition coil of 1.5 ohms resistance.

i know i will need some resistors for the gauges, but am i missing anything else?

thats handled with some of the other replys......

thanks!

feel free to call me for discussion on any of these issues ....
