Convertible top motor oil

I have a 59 Ford convertible. I have just had the top motor apart and cleaned. I'm wondering what to use for oil in it. The manual says to use brake fluid, but I was wondering if hydraulic jack oil would work. Any other suggestions. Thanks

I would think not to use brake fluid as it is both hygroscopic and if leaks can cause paint damage.

ATF or a hydraulic oil. ATF is usually about 10W.

Let me check a LUBE CHART.

Try to drain and flush the system.

OK ...

FORD call out for that period was BRAKE FLUID. Maybe that was then and improvements have been made..

If it were me ...

I would use DEXRON/MERCON V. Maybe an aftermarket with seal conditioners added. Or possibly a silicon brake fluid. It is hard to say what effect it will have on the cylinder seals. That's why it would be useful to fully flush and fill.

Did the pump repair kit suggest any specific type of fluid?

Hydro-E-Lectric mentions using DOT-3 for older systems prior to 1953 unless the hoses are replaced. With all new hoses ATF can be used regardless of year unless a person wants to use DOT-3. The use of brake fluid has the paint issue if there is a leak and moisture absorption is a real thing for vehicles that are not stored in a climate controlled environment.

I use ATF (Type F if I remember correctly) and it works fine. I would imagine hydraulic oil would be the same.

Thanks to everyone who replied.. We have determined that it is not brake fluid in the system and we are going to buy new hoses and flush the cylinders and go with transmission fluid.
