The control arm pin on the Borg warner overdrive on my 53 Merc was either missing or badly corroded or was replaced by a nail or something - anyway its gone. The overdrive is fixed but this pin is still MIA - would a roll pin work ok for this? Just tap it in firmly?

I am assuming that you are talking about one of the two shift arms.

If the arm is a sheet metal arm that has a split in the end that mounts on the trans. shaft, it is held together using a rivet that is meant to keep the split tube from spreading apart.
Either a rivet or suitable bolt and nut would work.
If the arm is a forging then a suitable roll pin will work.

The pin is a tapered pin that holds the control shaft in place. A straight pin is not designed to go in there and this would include a spring pin (roll pin). If you got one in there, it may be very difficult to get it back out at the next repair action. The P/N 73757-S is listed as Pin, (taper)-No. 5/32" X 1 1/4" in the parts catalog. There should still be some out there. You might check with Mac VanPelt.

Some use rivets to hold the shift arms. Mac VanPelt sells clevis pins that can be peened like a rivet on those transmissions that have the riveted arms.

MacVanpelt has a kit of parts that includes them.

also i have one taper pin left from doing the shift lever and OD control arm seals on my 53. if you PM me an address i will mail it to you......
