:mad:Have a head gasket leaking to the outside, (oil clean and clear) the dist. is stuck in place. Wanting it out to check the head to have a good surface. I have sprayed kronol hoping to loosen it up. I've used impack hammer on dist. tried pry barr, no luck, may need some time soaking.
Any suggestions????;)

One option. The suppliers sell a removal tool for about 35

The tool Mitch pictured is the best way to remove a stuck distributor.

After removing the locking screw on the side of the head I spray Kroil in that hole also. I have very carefully used two pry bars on the opposite sides of the distributor and pry up equally to lift the distributor. It's very easy to break the distributor by prying on one side only.

If your taking the head off just leave the distributor in the head and when you get the head off
knock the distributor out from the back side.

Bob C has made the best suggestion; guessing that you will be taking the head off to replace the leaky gasket.

If you don't pull the head; here is what I did. As Tom W suggested, spray Kroil in lock screw hole. Take some putty and plug the lock screw hole to puddle the Kroil. Take the same putty and make a dam on the head around the distributor. Again puddle the Kroil inside the putty dam. Replace Kroil as necessary. Next, buy some window frame shims from your favorite lumberyard. The are wedge in shape, and one can be put on each side between the distributor body and head. This will put upward pressure on the dissy-body. Tap them every so often to keep tight. I did this for a month before the distributor body came loose.

Good luck, Ron/IA

I sprayed a distributor with wd 40 for years, nothing. borrowed a friends puller and had the distributor out in 10 minutes. buy a puller you won't regret it.

;)I took the locking pin out yesterday (1-12-13), sprayed inside with kroil and around the base, when I walked by I would work two large bladed screwdriver under the dist., this afternoon (1-13-13), walked by and worked the screwdrivers again, noticed is was moving and out it come, needs a good cleaning. Now to pull the head. The kroil worked like a champ.:) We used a lot of kroil at the power station on turbine overhauls good stuff. Picked up an aersol can at our supplier for $15, a gallon is $62, ouck!!!!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions..

Ok since Jim has achieved his goal, lets talk about these two items since this may help someone else on down the road when they do a search...

What do you do if the distributor has a one-piece shaft in it? When lifting the head upward, will the firewall get in the way before the shaft clears the block?

Is WD40 a penetrating oil or more of a Water Displacer, ...hence the WD in the name?

Not sure what wd40 is but I does not loosen rusted parts that well. To loosen rust kroil, pbblaster and liquid wrench in that order seems to work best for me.

I agree Kroil is Great Penetrating oil.
If You blend 1 Quart of Acetone with a 1 Quart of Automatic Transmission Fluid, You get about the same as Kroil. I put it in Mommas empty Pump Spray bottles to spray it.

For removing Stuck on Rear Brake Drums to Shoes, I Suspended the Rear End Vertical, unbolted the Radius rods, used an old canning tub under the drum, and saturated inside the drum lip. Let it be over night, next morning came apart with only a screw on axle Knocker. I used a Paint strainer to strain out the Acetone Trans Mix, and reused it again. Works on Frozen Front axle drums also, or wherever you need penetrating oil.

:)Sure do like the sound of the ACETONE MIXED WITH AUTO TRANS. FLUID.;)

Jim, I'm not so sure that therein lies the problem. I have read in many different places that the two won't stay mixed and so basically because the acetone evaporates so quickly, all anyone is doing is thinning out auto transmission fluid and placing it on a fastener. I have read in as many places that this mix doesn't work as well as Kroil does, ...which for all I know Kroil may just be automatic transmission fluid mixed with something else!

.

Re; ACETONE MIXED WITH AUTO TRANS. FLUID. Keep it in a sealed container and shake before use. Someone did some testing and also posted some data on the mix, it was rated up in like the top 5 penetrating oils. There's also heat a paraffin.

Yes, I know some will say, "You not supposed to do dat"!! but,
I always remove the dowel that locates the dist. to the head, it's easy to align it by EYEBALL! Yes, the lock screw & nut WILL hold the dist. in place & it will NOT wreck the dist. Then if it ever seizes in the head, I can turn it to break it LOOSE! Chief's Motto was: "The easiest way is the BEST way if it does the job PROPERLY"! Bill W.
