continental kit for an A ?

why?? what for,, they all had spares on the back to begin with...maybe i am not getting what you are asking here, but a cont, kit is the spare on the back....like i had on my 60 Tbird??

mako4r,

Do you mean "double spares on the back"? Twin spares on the rear is not a common Model-A accessory. I beleive Snyder's sold a kit to accomplish this at one time. The kit consisited of three extension bars, threaded on one end and tapped on the other. You removed the three lug nuts off the spare screwed on the three extensons and then added the extra spare wheel. Kind'a classy in a way to me. I picked up an original set of extensions off eBay a while back, just waiting for the right "A" to come into my possesion to use them. One thing I have always wondered though would the spare wheel bracket be strong enough to support two complete wheel/tire spares?;)

Bob-A, it is not advisable to use double spares on a driver as the extra weight will not play well with the rear body panels and carrier. The extensions were era accessories. Owners who were on the road alot like businessmen useed them to be able to carry an extra spare in rural areas. They look neat on a show car or for a display. Years ago, Bob Hanselman had them on his '29 business coupe, really sharp. I have a set for my '29 business coupe.

I think he is talking about an enclosed metal cover like early V8s, '57 Chevys, Cads, etc. There is a metal cover accessory that you can buy. I'm sure Bratton's, Bert's, Synder's all have them. The '34 Fords had them factory.

I think I came across a kit of some sort that has some filler panels ,extension panels, then a stainless ring and cover for the tire. I'll post the pics here about noon. All came from a sale of 28-31 parts. I've looked at 100's of pics on www.carnut , Down loaded pdf files of ford catalogs...still no luck.

The outer two panels resemble a match to the fender. Roughly measures 55" across. Not sure of center panel direction. Any help appreciated and I don't own a model a ford.
