Con rod date?

Just curious, is there a way to date some 312 rods I just got? The shop said they came out of a Bird (there were some bird parts in the box). I am used to figuring out roughly the B7xxxxxxxx being 1957. But the rods say ECZ6205B.

Thanks,

Mike

Usually, on a FORD CASTING, there will be a CASTING I.D.NO. (in this instance ECZ-6205-B which indicates 312CI), a DATE CODE and MOLD NO.

Basically four different connecting rods used during the years of Y production with all being forged. Forging ID's would include EBU, ECZ, C1TE and C2AE. No cast rods there. If the connecting rods are breaking, I'll suggest looking for a reason other than the connecting rod material.

If using used rods, consider having them re-sized (IMO).

K, what do you mean ‘re-size’ the rods? These are used but I am keeping them as spares. Thanks, Mike

most engine builders, even rebuilders and over-haulers all have their own definition of what it is to resize crank rods. most definitions, it not all... more or less say the same thing. for a more precise definition/explanation... talk to the guy in the shop who does just that!

in the meantime here is one engine shop's tech's definition. hope it helps:

To "resize" the rod, the bolts are removed, then a small amount of metal is ground off the rod and the cap where they mate together. Then the bolts are reinstalled and torqued in place. Because of the metal removal, the big end is now smaller than when you started. Next you resize the large end back to the factory size using a machine called a "rod hone" .
