compensator jet for F1b carb

I’m trying to determine if the Tillotson F1b carburetor is supposed to have some sort of compensator jet in the fuel bowl. I have some rusty old F1b carb bottoms and there are no compensator jets, just a 3/16” (approx) passageway evidently leading to other passages. I researched some F1b carbs being sold on e-bay saw one whole carb being sold as workable which did not have a compensator jet (or gas reducer insert) of any kind either.

Any F1b experts out there?

I have a circuit drawing of the F1b somewhere, but from my memory the equivalent of a compensator jet is some internal restrictive passage way. The F1b has several such passages and is therefore difficult to clean and to keep clean.

Thanks Richard.

My carb parts do not indicate a visible comp jet. I put the carb on the car several years ago as a back-up and the car ran well after briefly hesitating from a start.

I've heard that the F1b can give great gas mileage but can be troublesome due to the small passages. Again, thanks.

If you want to do some digging, there was an extensive article about restoring those carbs in Skinned Knuckles in the early 1990's by a guy in the Seattle area named Russell Baetke (or something close to that). He gave a talk on it at the joint marc/mafca meet out there in 1994.

Also, there have been a few threads on it, but I couldn't turn them up easily using search.

You're welcome, but I'm not much help, I'm afraid. Searching under "russell baetke" turns up two prior threads that look to be of little value, and one that looks to be totally unrelated (?).

I can confirm that the gas mileage is better than with the Zenith. My 1930 Coupe had an F1B on it when I acquired the car and I ran it without a problem more than 50 years. My gas mileage was always 25-26 miles per gallon. When the Coupe had cosmetic restoration about 15 years ago to upgrade its appearance, I switched to a Zenith and now get 18-19 miles per gallon. I have also used a F1B on another Model A I own for over 30 years of driving, never a problem with the jets, and excellent gas mileage.
