There are stainless shells out there that were factory painted black. I have seen 2 pairs.
I hate to disagree. The shell on an AA truck was straight across but on the pickup it had the "widows peak" and looked like a plain steel version of the 1930 passenger car shell for 1930 and 1931. The badge matched the passenger car badge for the respective year. You didn't ask but here's a little more 30-31 pickup info. Taillight bucket, radiator shell and cowl band also are painted black. All are plain steel, not stainless, although the taillight has a stainless rim same as passenger. The shell is straight across the top below the badge - doesn't have the "widow's peak" like passenger. AFAIK, the badge and crank-hole cover are the same as passenger.
Seems most pickups have been "upgraded" with bright passenger parts - so much so that the painted commercial parts are hard to find.
