Columbia Overdrive

Hello:

I own a 1939 ford Deluxe and it has a Columbia overdrive in it. They originally had the vacuum line run to a spot below the carburetor. They installed some sort of adapter plate between the carburetor and the intake manifold with a vacuum fitting.

Can I just use a hole already in the intake manifold or do I need to re install the adapter plate to get the needed vacuum to make it work properly.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If the port is the same size as the other columbia tubes and fittings --yes, if it is a small port used for wipers --no

For 39 the only two holes in the intake manifold are for the distributor vacuum brake line and the second is for the wipers, both should be used. I would use the plate under the Carb. The plate shows up in the Columbia installation manual. It would be a much better source for the large volume of vacuum necessary to shift the Columbia.

If the size of the hose, tubeing or vacuum pick up is reduced shifting will be sluggish. G.M.

I initially put a T in the wiper hose to supply the vacuum for the Columbia in my '40 with a 4bbl carb. It worked OK, but was a bit slow in shifting. I later tapped a 1/4 x 3/8 barb fitting into the 1" carb spacer, and it now shifts instantly.

What would be the proper size hose going to rear ,I think I have 1/4 rubber hose and it drags sometimes or clicks when shifting, but never fails to shift,.

Original from Columbia was 3/8" copper plated steel tubing that ran the frame channel on the left, drivers side.Rubber hose fit over the two pieces of tubing so it was 3/8" i.d.
