Cold start?

My '39 has a good 59AB with rebuilt carb, new points, cap, wires, and spark plugs. I'm just learning what it likes, but I haven't figured what it likes when cold. Not really cold just over night. First off, it always starts, just takes a bit of cranking. I've tried a couple pumps and choke. I've tried just choke. I've tried just pumping a couple times no choke. I've tried just cranking, no choke no pumping. What usually happens (with the exception of the last method) is after it doesn't start I hold the pedal to the floor and it starts. How do you guys do it? Thanks,

On my 39' I installed a elec. In line fuel pump to prime the 97,. Fires right up..
Don't buy the one from Macs because the mech. Pump can't pull thur the in line without creating a by- pass.
Wire the elec. Pump up on a starter bottom . I think this ethanol fuel boils out of the carb's. Fast.. prime her up and fire on a the first note ......

I forgot to mention that I have an inline electric pump as a backup. It seems that if I turn it on it get worse. Go figure.

Your results may vary...... but,

I hold the pedal to the floor and pull the choke, logic being this adds maximum suction assistance to the fuel pump's ability to pull fuel from the tank. It still cranks over quite a bit, but not nearly as much if I do it differently. Hope this helps.

sounds almost like it's flooding....maybe leakdown from the carb overnight??.....get a blast of black smoke out of the exhaust when first starting??....Mike

Tap the electric backup just enough to prime. Pull choke out about 1/2 ". Push gas pedal (formerly referred to as the "foot feed") to floor and quickly release it. That just squirts a bit of gas into the carb. Turn on switch and hit starter button. It should crank in 1 or 2 turns.

I give it foot feed like Cox said, on the pedal and pull choke out now about 1/2" or less, weather is warmer now in CA, and I realized the 5/8 to 3/4 was bogging it down where it was starting in winter, after I shortened the choke distance she fired right up on 1 to 2 turns. Every once in a while she'll give me trouble but in the end it's usually something I did or didn't do. I'm running a 59AB stock

On a cold start, my stock '38 Pickup, 3 pumps of the gas pedal, pull out the choke just a little and hit the starter button. It will crank 2 or 3 times and start. On a warm start, I just hit the starter button and it fires right up.

This method worked perfect for me. Thanks guys.
