Coil wire

Sounds like another way to bypass the ignition resistor when cranking. Most solenoids have a terminal to do this.

The wire to the coil usually originates from the ignition switch. Main feed wire to system usually starts at the solenoid.

A diode is designed to allow current to flow one direction only and would have to be connected correctly to get it in the right direction and it would act as a cold start device if connected at the starter terminal.

A rebuilder told me to install a 3 amp diode in the wire going from the coil to the solenoid. What say you?
When Ford went to 12 volts they made a solinoide with 2 small terminals. One to started motor,2nd went to ign coil, only hot when starting so NO back circiut. If 6 volts i,d maybe use a relay.IT should start fine with 6 volts and only a .5 ohm resister.
