coil problems

Len - If you are running a 12 volt system and using a 6 volt coil you must have a ballast resistor in the hot lead to the coil. If your running straight 12 volts to the coil it will not last long and will cause the coil to really heat up. The ballast resistors reduce the voltage to about 6 volts before it gets to the coil. Now, they do make 12 volt coils that have extra internal windings to run on straight 12 volts and they are available at NAPA.

A quick way to tell the year of your engine is the placement of the distribuutor. If its a round dist on the front of the engine down centered between the water pumps its probably a 42-48. A "helmet" shaped dist in the same place is 41 and earlier. If the distibutor is mounted up high on the passenger side it a 49-53 (also 48 for truck engines). Now all this is only true on stock flatheads. Distributors can be swapped between models with front cover & cam changes etc.

If you have a 12 volt system go to a napa and get a coil for a Cadillac 1959thur 1969 my book doesn,t go any higher. There is NO resister used with this coil. They fit other cars and trucks Eclin IC 13 coil.
