coil output

What is the voltage output for a stock ford coil? I am running a H&C 1400, thinking about running a Harley Single fire coil, compact and sturdy design.

The output voltage to the spark plugs ON ANY COIL is dependent upon the resistance. The higher the resistance of plug & coil, high voltage wires, any gaps in the rotor to the distributor cap, and resistance in the plugs and the larger the plug gap all will make the coil increase high voltage output. The coils do have a limits to their high voltage output. Try to keep the resistance as low as possible by running non-resistor plugs and wires, keep the plug gap under 0.030, solder terminals on all the plug and coil high voltage wires, run a new rotor and cap on the distributor. Also H&C recommended changing the wire size to both coils to #12 especially if your running a 6 V system. also look at the ignition switch and make sure it is in excellent shape. This will assure you have enough voltage to the coils from the battery.

Use the 0012 Bosch blue coils, the harmon collins units wont stand high voltage and will burn up those hard to find parts.
The advantage was that the 1400 is two four cylinder ignition systems allowing a longer dwell time for the coils to ramp and fire . A flathead doesnt need a whole lot based on compression ratios etc.... keep it simple......
