Coil oddity

A couple of us are trying to bring some older coils back to life with new capacitors and, in some cases, new secondary windings. We are particularly interested in redoing those that have what appears to be a brass top on them.

We are having middling success to date--one of our friends supplied the coils from a large collection of dead coils he has kept in his quonset hut garage for several years.

Most of the coils have two secondary windings but we now have uncovered one with three secondary windings. The resistance reading for this coil is considerably higher than the usual [3000 ohms] and we are wondering if this is correct for this type of coil or should it read the usual 3000 like all of the others.

Those brass top coils you have are the early teens versions. In 1913 KW made the flat top brass, then the cupped top brass Ford mfg or KW mfg 1913-1915, and then the cupped top brass with the more common tongue and groove case for 1916-1917. After that all Ford or KW coils were wood topped.

three secondary windings?

Ron,

Thanks for the information on the specific ages of the coils. Can you also shed some light on the 'three secondary winding' coil?

Bob
