I am to put the coil spring in my Ford 1953 Chassi. The Chassi is clean with no body or other parts on in. How to put the front coil spring back in the chassi. Some particular tools which will be good to have ?

Regards

Basic springcompressors should work fine...or is it any other issues you are having ?

Hi

Thanks for you answer
Yes i wonders which type of spring compressor it would be best to use? It looks a bite cramped where to get the the springcompressor to work when the spring is put in the front end.

Regards

Mikael

The last time I installed mine the upper 'A' arm was connected, the spindle support mounted to both 'A' arms, the spring placed into position and then the lower 'A' arm jacked into position and bolted to the frame. No spring compressor was used.

There may not be enough weight to make it work with a jack. A piece of pipe between the frame and an I beam above. if you have that available might work. Coil springs hae a lot of potential energy when compressed. It can be one of the more dangerous things to work on.

With no weight on the chassis I don't think jacking the lower A arm will work. I would use a heavy threaded rod (1/2" or larger) through the shock absorber mount holes on the frame and lower A arm to compress the spring from the inside.

Standard operating procedure to remove and replace the spring is to put the weight of the car on the spring (compressing it) Disconnect the upper spindle support bolt, then lower the 'A' arm and remove the spring.
Because I did not want to alter caster/camber settings I chose to dis-connect at the lower 'A' arm attach points. The same goal was achieved.

I tried to remove a front coil on a 51 Mercury with the engine and trans removed and I had to fabricate a long bar that I could bolt an engine block to it in order to weight it enough.

I purchased a spring compressor for my Ford Ranger pickup and found that it will compress the spring for the Merc. Here is a link for OTC 7045B set. https://www.nationaltoolwarehouse.c...-P27270.aspx?gclid=CMasoeT989ACFUS2wAodVIwMDg

This is the best one I've ever used.

This might not be much help but I remember replacing a front coil spring on my 71 Chev pickup a few years ago. Can't recall many details other than I had no special tools or skills and also no problems completing the job. Hopefully the Ford will be the same.
