Hi: I would like to know, when hooking up the coil on my 55 Ford which side of the coil is the distributor lead hooked up too? The car still has the 6V pos ground system! I had the dist. hooked up to the + and the batt. hooked up to the -. Well it ran like crap it idled okay, but seem to drag while running down the road (no guts). I would floor it and it would miss like crazy. I went and switched the wires making dist. - side and batt. + side. It seems to idle a lot better and starts easy too. I can't time the car very good because my harmonic balancer is stretched making it a little rough to do that. I have set the timming with a vacuum gauge. Should I increase the advance?

The points are the ground so the distributor should be hooked to the + side of the coil in a + ground system. Sounds like maybe an investment in a new coil is in order.

I have replaced a coil lead to the distributor and solved the problem you are having. To time with the vacuum gauge, advance the distributor untill you get the maximum vacuum, then back off 1/2 inch of vacuum. Test drive. If it doesnt ping, you are done. Next winter send your damper to the Damper Dudes in California. They will make it new again for less than a hundred bucks and the timing mark will be right on.

I have replaced the coil as dave72dt suggested and have solved the miss problem. The coil was the only thing I meesed with over the winter. I'll check out the dampner dudes here. Thanks again for all the help............Dave
