hi Guys, i'm having trouble trying to identify a noise coming from my roadster. with the engine running i hear like a rubbing sound, i step on the clutch and it goes away.I'm thinking the throw out bearing? it was installed new when i put it all together a few yrs. ago, but i only have maybe 1500 miles on it. before i do any extra work ,is there maybe a greese fitting that needs to be greesed? and before i search my repair manuals i figured i get some advise here. what would be involved in replacing the bearing , now that the car is up and running ?? thank for looking THE HOOCH

In one of my cars, I get a squeak when the engine is idling that goes away when I press the clutch. I have tracked it to the front engine mount. While it is still annoying, now that I know what it is, I put up with it.
I bet you get other responses suggesting that when you push the clutch pedal, you are moving the crank shaft forward and that is for one reason or another causing the noise to stop.
If you have a stethoscope, you will find it much quicker.

Syncro,
I had a similar situation on an unrestored, original car that was very rusty all around the front engine mount area. The plate that supports the springs was chaffing/binding against the front crossmember and making a horrific racket. I started spraying it with a good quality penetrating lube and the noise went away!

I had that kind of squeak and was advised to tighten the motor mount bolts slightly on both sides after hosing the assemblies down with WD-40. It worked, although I was lucky in that the sound hadn't come from the many other potential sources of squeaks and rattles.

The throwout bearing does not spin when your foot is off the clutch. It isn't touching anything to make it spin. Now,if it started to make noise when you stepped on the clutch, that would be the throwout bearing.

To answer your question "what would be involved in replacing the bearing "

A whole lot of work to remove the throwout bearing. Either remove the engine or my preferred way is to move out the rear end.

Is the car fitted w/the stock front motor mount w/the springs? If so, try applying some oil as others have suggested, worked for me.
