clutch sticking

Hi guys
New flathead owner here. I have a 37 ford Tudor Humpback with the 85hp.
My issue is the clutch pedal sticks when releasing the pedal. About the time the clutch should start engaging. But only when the motor Is running and in gear. Neutral works fine and when engine is off, all gears work fine. I never know when it will break loose and send me flying.
I have checked every spring and greased everything I could find.
I'm thinking throwout bearing myself. Your thoughts?

Have you looked at the throwout bearing action through the inspection plate on the transmission? Anything odd going on there?

Maybe check that the bolts that hold the transmission to the engine bell housing are all quite tight. Maybe take the strain off of that connection by putting a jack under the rear of the oil pan and apply a bit of upward pressure. Then tighten the bolts.

I do think I see the throwout bearing Tilt to the right slightly, While pushing down on the peddle. Also the Motor mounts a Pretty flat. Could be an alinement issue? I will try that with the Jack. I don't believe I checked the bolts to the bell housing.

If the trans slid in the clutch and bolted up using the factory alignment dowels, then everything should be in alignment, that shouldn't change. It sounds more like It could have a groove on the throw-out bearing retainer that it's hung up on. Maybe the clutch plate springs are no good or it's missing its pedal return spring. It might me out of adjustment. How much free play is in the clutch pedal before the throw-out bearing just starts to make contact with the clutch.

My plan now is to pull the motor and trany. I ordered new throw out bearing, collar, spring and release fork. Also clutch pedal return spring. I'm also replacing the motor mounts and checking out the Universal joint. A old clutch plate came with the car. Viewing thru the inspection plate, it looks like it has been changed out. But no idea when. Free play is around 1 1/2".

The only time I ever had a sticky clutch like that was when I left the bottom cover off a 60's vintage ford and enough moisture got in there to seize up the pins on the PP fingers. in that case, only a few drops of oil fixed it. Maybe look thru the top cover to see if thats the issue here before you tear it all apart.
