Cluck question

I have to take a look, but would like a few opinions as well. On my 53 Ford, Fordomatic (auto), when I put it in reverse, I get a loud "Clunk". Not so much when I am putting it in drive. Seems to only be when I start out in reverse. It drives and shifts fine, no weird whinning, or other transmission noises, goes in reverse fine, no slipping, just the annoying clunk when first put in reverse from park.. When from park I go straight to neutral, then to reverse I don't get it so bad. I am suspicious of maybe I need a U-Joint. I plan to very soon put it up on jack stands and take a look at my U-joint as a possible perp. But again, any input would be appreciated.

I just fixed a noise like that in my 33,was .020 backlash in the ring and pinion mesh.

I agree with both posts above. Anything that allows extra rotation in the driveline can make the "clunk"ing noise.

Another source could be the slip joint hanging up on the splines at rear of transmission. A little Lubriplate usually fixes it. This, of course, fixes a "clunk", I don't know how it will work on chicken noises!

In this case I think it will work fine on the chicken noise too.
