I had a similar sounding problem and it was the timing gear.
It was a two piece type with an aluminum center part and a fiber outer gear part.
The two sections were starting to separate from each other. During low RPM’s the noise was more pronounced than higher RPM’s.
I replaced the gear with a one piece type.
