Choke spring issues

OK so I got the new choke rod, spring, sleeve on the car... sleeve holds great (old rob was held on with some zip ties), spring pulls choke back..... about every 3rd or 4th time I pull choke, the spring gets caught in the firewall. Looks like I'm missing a washer or something at the firewall. I can't find a picture of the choke rod/firewall assy. Can find pics of carb all day in mech books and catalogs but nothing pass the choke sleeve.

What am I missing here, sure someone has the great knowledge here.

metal cup washer like cup washer on floor boards ..../ a leather round washer on firewall with metal round cup washer to follow. then spring
