Chit Chat At The Meet

I attended the 67th Model A Ford New England Meet in Rocky Hill Connecticut. There was a daily "Parking Lot Party" in which many many opinions about Model A's were spoken.

Radial Tires was a popular topic as several Model A's had them. Not one owner said that the high cost of radials made any worthwhile difference in handling.
The Universal Tire Company in Pennsylvania was bought out and the Universal brand of tires is not so commonly found anymore. Many praise the Universal Tire as a good original era looking tire that runs well on a Model A, and their price was affordable. I recently bought a set of 4.75-5.00x19 Universal Tires from Summit Racing that cost $120 each for black walls.

Radiators were also talked about. Some folks said the high cost or re-coring an original radiator was equivalent to buying a new radiator having superior rows of tubes and more cooling fins.

Headlights with modern bulbs were impressive to many. I was asked why the headlights in my Victoria were so bright. I have 12v halogen bulbs in mine. Model A's with LED headlights were just as impressive.

The AACA Meet In Hershey, Pa is a growing concern to many. There was talk of the meet moving to a new location. There was also a rumor that HERCO is more interested in other money making venues than the largest car flea market on the planet. It appears that many sellers leave Hershey early which is disappointing to buyers.

Open versus Closed Model A's was a topic discussed. Apparently closed cars are more in demand than open cars by folks with youngsters, by folks who run in the fall and spring, and new club members just entering our hobby. In the meet parking lot, closed cars were overwhelming in numbers.

Meet Hotel Food leaves a lot to be desired in taste and cooking especially considering the high cost of the meals. Several folks will be eating at local restaurants in lieu of opting for the host club's meal offerings.

Club Activities were discussed. Several consider their home Model A clubs to be lacking in Model A running activities. Attending the Gettysburg, Pa national meet was a very popular conversation.

I agree with all of the points that Bob made and the conclusions drawn. I know tires are a controversial topic sometimes but one member of my club is particularly against radial tires. He has a set on his fine point restoration and he hates the ride quality of them.

Also I think that club activities is a good topic to discuss. RI has a small club and we hardly do more than two or three activities a year. According to long-standing members we used to do one most every month (or even multiple in one month). As a young person with energy I hope to change that. I'm particularly interested in mechanical seminars or a type of event where we check the running state of each car

For those of you that are having ride quality issues with your radial tires, try more air pressure. Modern tires, which the radials are, can withstand 200 psi Try 45 or 50 psi. The test is the temperature of the tire after a run of 30 minutes or more at 50 mph. They should be warm to the touch and not hot. Maybe 30 degrees F above ambient max.

Thank you for the good info

Ditto Bob interesting read!!!

I sprung the extra $$ for Goodyear Diamond Treads a couple years ago, they were pricey, but if I did it again I'd be more than happy with Universals from Summitt!!

As little as I drive our car, maybe 200-250 miles a year, radials vs. bias ply aren't a deal breaker for me personally. Once you get the feel of bias ply ain't no big woof.

My tires time out age wise before they wear out so high priced tires really are not a good option. I just liked the looks of the Goodyears always have.

The AACA meet in Hershey has been discussed ad nauseum. AACA insists that they are there to stay and why not believe them? HERCO is a company and all about revenue, which is why the meet now ends on Friday. They do nothing during the week and have visitors on weekends. I personally am not crazy about the change, but it is what it is.

The Hershey meet draws thousands and is a boon to other businesses in town. Where else could you put on an event like that? Not many places, so I think those rumors are just that.

Re: the cost of meals at meets is highway (hotel?) robbery. Poor quality and at least 2x what it "should" be. Not sure what can be done about it as it is a widespread practice in the industry, but something meet organizers should be, and probably are, sensitive to.

i was nearby the meet on Saturday night returning from a trip to see family in NH. I thought about stopping by, but didn't, unfortunately.

The importance of good food inside Hershey park..., avoid the food courts. Seek out the single food truck away from everyone else. I visit the same spot everyday, good breakfast and lunch. Get a $2 discount on a drink if you bring there plastic cup back to refill!!
On Parts prices....A new Radiator will do it's job for a very long time, it will add value when selling a model A.
Tires.....If I'm driving around 25 miles a week and going 50mph + I'm going to have new tires and Real good Brakes!!!!

Bob, appreciate the notes from the chats!

Thankfully, the Hershey AACA added a fourth date to this year's coin. This will hopefully alleviate the rumors about the show being moved any time soon.

As a data point, I'm a "youngster" (48) and I have one of each...the Phaeton and a Victoria. I like driving my Phaeton, but even in SE Virginia, I have about six months of comfortable driving time. My Victoria, on the other hand, can be driven year round.

For someone who enjoys driving, if I could only own one, I'd own a closed Model A (this is why my Phaeton is being restored to fine point...I don't plan on driving it much so "perfection" is a different aim).

Roadsters are fun and look neat.

That being said, our '29 Tudor was THE best all around Model A Ford I ever owned or was around. Easier to get in and out of than our Roadsters plus it was a lot warmer to drive on cold days. Tudors are hard to beat just a great all around Model A Ford.

My father-in-laws '30 Coupe was a close second to that Tudor!

Tudors were the most popular model; with a mainly steel body, they survive in large numbers and are consequently among the most affordable body types.

Honesty I think coupes are better. Don't they have more leg room than the Tudors? Easier to heat too with a smaller cabin. Plus the light curb weight is nice for handling. Just want to stir the pot a little :)

And the doors are not wobbley I do think the seats in the fordors look comfy for a longer drive...

When it rains the open cars are miserable.

How did we get from chit-chat in a parking lot to Tudors are the best Model A??:eek:

THIS was how...please re-read the topics...

'Open vs. Closed Model A's.....

And while I'm here I'll go one farther... the 1930 Tudor is a bit better car then the '29!

I have a roadster and a Town Sedan. The roadster is a blast and the one I drive the most these days, but the Fordor is probably best for touring.
