checking oil pump

If the pump is out of the motor, what is the best method for checking out? I have a fresh rebuild on the motor and have no oil pressure when just spinning the motor over with the starter, with plugs out. I removed the side plug in block no oil comes out while spinning over.

Try putting the pump in a pan of oil and spinning it with your fingers -then if you have oil flow block off the outlet and try to spin again -it should feel like it is almost locked up.

Do you have a gear about 2" dia left over???, the idler gear under the cover behind the flywheel drives the oil pump.
