How to check a used rear? I know I can check to see if it is filled with oil or water. Is it possible to unbolt the driver side housing an pull it out enough to inspect inside without disturbing the preload? How about I mike the gasket and replace with a like new one? Also can someone with a green book tell me if the bearings and races are the same on model A as flathead. I have a 1939 That I could take parts from.I think the U joint and parts on that end are the same. Thanks John

John, you can open it up and inspect it for obvious problems. Yes you can use Permatex and re-assemble, ....and in all liklihood if you change the preload by as much as .10", it probably won't matter in the operation after re-assembly.

Now, here is the difference between the Ford barn and the HAMB. After 7 hours on the board, you would have had about 35 replies-and most of them would have been inappropriate for family viewing. Here, you get actual, helpful information. :)

John,

When you pull it apart, assuming the wear pattern on the gears is good, measure the thickness of the gaskets and replace them with the same thickness. Suppliers sell different thickness gaskets and sometimes you need more than one.
