put a gm alt on a 49 to 53 ford can not get battery to charge had alt check by two diff shops checks good any help appreciated

Need more info. 6v alt or 12, internally regulated or externally regulated, is stock regulator still in circuit? etc etc.

What is the actual voltage output on your car? It should be very close to 14.4 V. Your battery may also be defective and not able to take a charge.

What are you using to tell you that it's not charging as required?
As stated use a volt meter across the battery. If you are seeing appox. 13.5 volts or better , it's charging.
My stock ammeter in the car most of the time shows little movement but the alt. has always charged the battery.

The one wire requires that you rev up your engine to get the charge going. One of the advantages of the three wire is you do not have to rev the engine.

they tell me it should show about 14.4 if the alt is right . volt meter on bat 12.0 volts on alt to battery still 212 volts

This could be due to the fact that it's a 1-wire setup or it could be wired wrong. Not sure I understand how the alternator can check out good (which I assume means it is outputting around 14+ volts) at two shops and has near zero output on the car. Sure sounds like a wiring or battery issue. At what engine RPM are you checking the battery voltage? I would check it around 2000 RPM and see what the output is. If still nothing, I would guess that there has to be a wiring problem somewhere.

You have the ground at the right pole on the battery ??
Try to excite the generator when running if its reving to low to selfexcite it will start charging after that.
