I have a 6 volt battery and alternator installed on my 31 roadster, for months the ammeter was working perfectly. When first started and increasing the rpm's, the ammeter needle would charge over to positive within seconds, and then would fall back gradually to its regular position, just slightly above the center position. Now, the needle stays in the "0" position for several minutes, and eventually will flop over to positive charging, and as before, drop back to is center position after charging is complete. This will occur each time, even though I accelerate the rpm's, nothing happens, but after several minutes, charging will take place as I have explained. I thought it might be the fan blade belt, but it seems to have enough tension on it. I did notice that the warmer the engine the faster the needle drops back to "0" position. The battery turns the engine over pretty well and I replaced it with a new one about 3 years back along with a new ammeter.
Any thoughts on what my problem might be??????
