My 29 started charging goofy, it idles at bout 12-14 amps but goes down 8 amps when reved up. Ive double checked grounds and added one to the motor and the gauge is wired correctly. It used to behave normal as is. My concern other than the generator is the cut out post (to gen) gets a little warm, but seems to work. Ive also tried moving brush 3 around. Any thoughts may be helpful , thanks

12 to 14 amps is too much charge. It will cook the water out of the battery and shorten it's life. Move the adjustable brush UP to lower the output and see what the gauge shows. You could have a worn brush in the generator, loose or corroded connection, or even a bad battery. Bad contacts in the cutout can also cause erratic meter movements.
