Chapter 7 on the E-15 Fiasco!

More bad news, as if the next 4 years weren't enough bad news already.

Seems everyone but a few farmers and the government is against the ethanol crap, but it's still going to be shoved down our throats.

Thanks for the link to an informative article. It will be interesting to see how well the cellulosic ethanol technology develops to replace use of corn; that has been being worked on for a long, long time. Of course, the source of the ethanol won't make any difference to the cars, but otherwise it will be good news (on top of the good news about our next four years :)).

The government is in the car business. To sell cars people have to have a need to buy. So the government has a two prong approach. Divert the corn from food to fuel and claim they have to do it to reduce oil imports, destroy the cars already on the road by increasing the ethanol and the price of fuel and then force us to buy thier electric cars.

Look at the clunkers for cash program. The goverment had the citizens believe that a high fuel usage car uses more fossil fuels then the building of a new car and putting it on the road. Really? The mining of raw materials, the creation or rather importation of the steel and aluminum used in a car, all the copper, plastic and so on and so on is a better "carbon footprint" then a well running car already on the road?

While I'm at it how about light bulbs? A little sand and a piece of glowing wire is worse than a florescent bulb with mercury in it and all the copper mining to produce the wires for the transformer and how about all the chemicals for the plastics used. LED lamps use transformers, plastics, aluminum heat sinks, with all the mining for the raw materials. They take longer to produce so more lighting, heating, cooling, electricity, for the plants and the workers of all the sub assemblies. But it is better than a regular bulb?

Did you know that the state of vermont banned the sale of neon lights because of the "all the mercury that was being dumped into landfills" but say nothing about CFL's?

Do you think the public would buy it if they were told there was a way to reduce their household energy bill by 99% but they had to spend millons of dollars to do it, would it be a good deal? Then why does the public think cash for clunkers, CFL bulbs, ethanol etc is a good deal?

And for those that are wondering how all this relates to our cars, we joke about how our cars "make their territory" but one drop of oil can render how hany gallons of water? Is it really so far fetched that "oil polluters" be given a fine, required to be repaired or taken off the road forever? That all vehicles used for transportation have a minimum MPG or be removed from the road or destroyed to prevent them from being used?

Humble opinion on our current Fiasco:

Our country is presently partially controlled by lobbyist, (both foreign & domestic), who contribute to the current administration & Congress to establish policies, procedures, & to pass laws to benefit the desires of the lobbyist as opposed to benefit the desires & wellbeing of the citizens. Congress in turn is creating more Government jobs to regulate obstacles that curtail the progress of our free enterprise.

This is mostly how Greece recently got in a bind with lobbyist controlling labor wages, & early retirement systems, & lobbying the Greek Government to throw money their way & also to hire more Government agencies to control & regulate free enterprise.

In the height of Model A days, (until 1935), we had such a wonderful American to lecture to our then retarded Government officials who tried to exercise Government control to get us out of the 1929 Model A time Depression.

Our grest comedian Will Rodgers used to say something like this:

1. "Ever time Congress passes a law, it's a joke -- every time Congress tells a joke, it's a law."

2. "The two (2) most disgusting things in life one could ever witness is a butcher making sausage & our Congress passing laws."

He would fit right in with us today complaining about ethanol & higher taxes.

Ok Mike and Henry, Don't you know it's not allowed to confuse people with FACTS? It's now officially referred to as "politicizing" so not only is it not allowed here but you will be stoned if you do so in public!

Oops! I drifted a bit off topic. My Model A's are doing well and seem to run well on just about anything except they sputter a bit on hot air. :)

Hey, Mike V, right on, the truly real problem is that no one in Washington can see the big picture! They look at a small piece of a random painting by an unknown, the rest being covered by a sheet, and jump to the conclusion they are looking at a Rembrandt.

At one time Ford Rangers were deliberately run retarded (by the computer so you could not change it) in order to meet emissions stds. OK, so we have less pollutants per gallon but more gallons per mile, so what did we win?? Actually this applies to most emissions standards. And you wonder why we can't get mileage up over 35-40 mpg? Rip the crappy emissions devices off there and watch the mpg go up. The higher the mpg, the less emissions per mile and the less dependence on foreign oil !! There, that is the whole picture !!

I will admit when I first heard the idea of the ethanol I thought it was a grand idea. However after living with it for a while I have found I dont like it after all, and avoid it whenever possible...especially in my old cars and small engines.
It seems very hard for us to accept we were wrong and undo something once it gets started.

When I worked at the MoPar dealership in the late 70's to early 80's the factory timing was 0* TDC, but when the customer would bring his car or truck in for a tuneup I'd always set the timing at 10* BTDC. The customer would come back and say how much the power and mileage has improved.

I recall reading that Henry Ford was a proponent of alcohol based fuel. When the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, he proposed converting the breweries to the production of motor fuel.

I have run gasahol since 1975, no problems, but not in small engines that dont get used much. This is like using diff. oils, everyone has their on opinion. In the 1950's we used AMOCO unleaded gas in our cars, ran real good , no burnt valves like you here today that will happen if you use it. I think the T was acually engineered to run on it.

No corn!! then why are goverment paying farmers not to raise corn?I know farmers who make as much money from intielments, sitting in the house!!
