Changing latch return spring

So what's the secret in changing the latch bolt return spring on a '37 Ford door latch. I opened up the holder and removed the spring, but I'll be damned if I can wind up the new one tight enough to get it back in. Am I missing some secret trick here? Thanks, Bill

I have grabbed 1/2 the width with vice grips, twisted and pushed the spring into the tabs with a screwdriver as I released the vicegrips.
