Hey does anyone out there have any pictures or detailed information on how to switch a 29 steering column bracket with a 31. Reason being my gas tank is leaking where the coloum and gas tank come together. I would like some detailed information on how to do it. thanks Ryan:)

What ??? If your gas tank is leaking where the column and gas tank come together ,i don't think changing the brackets will stop the leak[no way]. Take the tank out and find a better tank or repair the one that leaks. VERY CAREFULLY ..I would contact Brent Terry for that .

No my gas tank is leaking where the column is attached to the gas tank. Im going to remove the tank and have it fixed. But i want to switch to the 1931 bracket so that this problem never happens again. So im looking for pictures or detailed information on the bracket hat has to be fabricated so that it will work on my 29 phaeton. Thanks for your help

after you repair the leak as Peter suggests, installing a 31 bracket is a piece of cake and will prevent a recurrence since the stress will now be on the dash rail instead of the gas tank. When you get the 31 bracket, installation is practically self evident. It bolts to two bolts under the dash along the top dash rail. Look up under the dash with a flashlight and you will see a line of bolts, two of which are centered above the steering column. You bolt the new support there. The bracket is available from most suppliers for around 30 bucks...no need to fabricate.

Very simple as Pat says. You may need a 3/8" or therabouts spacer strip to make up the length difference and drill one hole (28/29). Just remove the dash panel and mount it with screws, washers and nuts. Make sure the old clamp isn't in contact with the steering column because vibration can cause it to leak again. On my 29 I repaired the slight leak by draining the tank and using the steel gas tank repair kit from Permatex coating the whole area of the old clamp attachment, works fine for the last five years. I have a restored tank to put in but I'll wait, don't need to go through all the work.

If you have the tank out, you might think about removing (or trimming) the original bracket when you fix the leak. Then just use the later style support and you are all set.

Thanks so very much. I think i will remove the paint around the sterring column and then use that gas tank repair kit. and then install the 31 bracket. Also what if i was to grind down the old 29 bracket the one that is soddered to the tank so that i have more clearence from the column? Thanks again for all the help the pictures are worth a million

Ryan, did you get my PM and picture?

The pictures shown above are the ones I noted in my PM about putting a spacer between the bracket and dash bolt down place. I found I did not need to do that.

As far as the old bracket, I think I would take your tank to a radiator shop and have them fix it for you. And I would leave the bracket on and not grinding it down-you may do more damage that good doing that.

Good luck

Hey does anyone know what might work better for fixing the leak
JB WELD OR THE PERMATEX GAS TANK REPAIR. Or should I use both. maybe i could use the Permatex first let it dry then use some JB WELD? thanks again for all your help i never new how usefull it would be joining the ford barn but im sure glad i did.
