Cerakote wheels and prep

I’ve been planning on doing my wheels for a long time but now a good buddy of mine started his own Cerakote business.

I had planed on powder coating my wheels anyway so why not Cerakote as he’s giving me a heck of a deal.

I’m doing the blasting with his equipment but I know there’s pitting on a lot of my wheels. What equipment do you all recommend using for the follow up sanding?

Also does anyone know off hand a good paint code for Cerakote for Model A wheels? Right now I’m leaning toward a semi-gloss they call graphite black. My car is a survivor and won’t ever be fully restored (painted). More like “patina preservation”

If your wheels are pitted you'll want to fill and sand them. That will preclude powdercoat ot the baked Cerakote. Cerakote does have an air dry formula but I don't know what colors it comes in.
Semi gloss is actually a hard finish to take care of. Too much cleaning/polishing and it will get shiny spots giving it a splotchy look.
Find yourself some better unpitted wheels to start with or fill and spray can what you have.
There is a high temp filler but it's pricey. https://www.eastwood.com/hi-temp-la...MI4KbVxIKWkgMVtTNECB15Uif-EAAYASAAEgIDmvD_BwE

Yeah. While I was there sandblasting he mentioned possibly doing an Eastwood epoxy primer to fill in. Apparently he runs Cerakote at 150ish degrees [emoji2369]

In the past when dealing with deeply pitted metal that's ultimately going to be powder coated I've used JB weld as a filler since it will handle the heat from the powder coating oven.

I’ve always thought that the issue with fillers and powder coat is that you need a good solid base metal substrate so the powder will be electrostatically attracted. Not so much the temperature. Am I misunderstanding the powder coat process?

We were there 2 hours and only got one wheel blasted and not entirely clean. Not sure what I am going to do. Have half a mind to run some sort of filler and just rattle can them out of frustration. Cerakote is going to be a super nice finish that is going to show every flaw. I might talk him into just doing normal powder coat. I have a basic eastwood kit for that but he has the paint booth and oven.

See if there is a company near you that can sandblast your wheels. Trying to sandblast them in a home type sandblast cabinet can sorely test ones patience.
Very nice looking wheels can be had by using the two part primer and paints in aerosol cans. You can have the color you want mixed and put into the cans by most automotive paint supply houses.

Cerakote is much thinner that powder coat or even paint. It will show the truth.....
I use it on exhaust and headers all the time. Holds up great

Les Schwab Tire in Washington did do Model T or A wires blast & p.c. black for around $30 - $40 a wheel - sent to a truck wheel shop in Oregon, I believe - been a few years ago.

Been more than a few. I know the Powder company that Schwab uses. I use to go directly to them. 3 years ago they charged me $50 per wheel. Last year, it was $100 per wheel. Sometime between then and now the Powder coater sold the business. I got a new quote from them about a month ago. $150 ea. for base in stock colors,
plus extra for custom colors.

As I said, Used to go to......
