Some oil is better than the zero that it gets now.
When you drill, put something to "back up" the babbit. Like a big fat wooden closet rod. Think about drilling a 1/2" hole in a shelving board. If you don't back it up, it splinters the underside. If you tear that babbit off the cap that is bad, very bad. Drill slow. A small drill press, and a helper are good ideas.
