Center Hood Hinge Pin

I am working on my hood pieces on my '29, and purchased a set of the stainless rods to replace the original shafts. The two side rods fit well, but the pin for the center is too large, and will not pass through the eyelets on the top hood halves. Has this been a problem for others and how did you solve the dilemma. I do not have the center original pin for measurement.
I am hesitant to open the eyelets any for distorting the hood panels at that point.

I replaced the rods on my 29 Hood, they were solid stainless and fit with out any adjustment. I've seen stainless rods that were hollow like the original top rod and don't know if there is a problem with them.

I had to shorten the new top rod; it took several tries until I got it the right length; it shouldn't extend beyond the top panel on both ends.

Hope this helps.

Russ, I just encountered this same problem on my 29 hood. I have my orginal hollow rod and the stainless rod measures about 12 thousands larger. I want to use the stainless to avoid rust in the future so a friend who is a machinst is turning it down to fit. I have used the stainless several times in the past and never had a problem. Appartently Brattons has changed supliers. Tom

As Tom said, Brattons may have a new supplier; the set I used came from Brattons, however, have had them a number of years before I used them ?

I contacted Walt at Bratton's, and he said he has always sold the center rod measured .374, so no vendor change. That is what my rod measures, but it sure does not fit. Any other ideas? I'd sure like a consensus as to what an original one measures.

How tight should the rod be? On my hood, the outer (most front & most rear) loops fit fine on the 3/8ths rod, but the other center eyelets are too tight. They are round and do not look pinched. ???????????????????

I just bought a new set of Stainless Steel hood rods for my 29 phaeton. They are made by Vintique in the usa. Are they the ones that are going to give me problems? And if they are what am I to do?

To install the new rod is no problem.
Take and oil the new rod and also oil the hinge openings.
Attach the new rod in a 3/8 drill and drill it in.
It works for me.
The new rod should measure .375 diameter.
All of the rust should have been removed from the hood hinges and very light paint on the hinges. Sometimes we put too much paint on a part could cause a problem.
Good luck.

Ronnie, are you saying the fit should be so tight as to require oiling the rod and loops for it to go through? If that is the case maybe mine is OK, as I tried putting it in dry with the drill, and I made it halfway through the first loop before it bound and scored the rod.

Russ oil and no build up of paint in the hinge hole.
If you have a build up of paint take your old rod from the side hinge wrap some emery cloth around it and run it through with the drill and sand some of the paint off.
Oil and drill should do it of installation.

A trick an Old Timer told me....
Of course my Hood is not Show Quality, just a Driver.

Use a length of 3/8 All Thread coated with Penetrating oil on a drill, to remove the Rust and Paint in the Hinge. Use a Variable Speed Drill on Slow Speed.

Then he Recommend using a Solid Stainless rods for both the Center and Hood Panels, but buy the correct size for the Lower Panels, which are available locally, any hardware store, or Lowes and Home Depot.
