Cell phones and Model A's...

Is there a device for which one can attach to either a 6-8 volt or 12 volt Model A/AA system to charge a cell phone with using the cigar lighter to cell phone charging wire as one does in a modern car or truck?

If so, how would this "device" be attached to the Model A/AA Ford?

Thanks.

The TWELVE VOLT method is a cake walk.
Just pick up a female cigar lighter at a West Marind or Radio Shack and hook it up. The Marine version would have bot positive and negative wires rather than requiring it to be mounted for a chassis ground.

For SIX VOLT POSITIVE GROUND, it would be easier to pick up one of those portable devices into which you put batteries and it provides twelve volts output for charging cellphones. Campers use them.

Seems like a hassle. I suggest carrying a second charged cell phone battery with you instead and charge them both at night in the phone (one at a time) with a wall outlet charger.

I purchased the Power Convertor from Snyders.

"These units convert your model A's 6-volt positive ground systems power to 12-volt negative ground so you can power a CB, radio, or any other 12-volt accessory."

I mounted it under the seat rail with a twin 12v receptable where it's easy to get at, yet not readily seen. I run cell phone and GPS navigation simultaneously without problems.

As mentioned above, for a car with a 12-volt system you can add an accessory cigar lighter obtained from any auto patrs store. Attach it under the dash rail on the passenger side and connect it to one of the terminals on the firewall terminal box.

For a 6-volt car you can obtain a converter from Bratton's that will convert a positive ground 6-volt to a negative ground 12-volt output. I made up such a device for my positive ground 6-volt Victoria.

For information go to www.ocmafc.org. On the left menu click on "tech articles" it will pull up another menu. Click on "Tom Endy's Special Topics". Scroll to "Power Converer" and click on it. The article will describe the unit and includes photos of the installation.

You may be able to run it off the 6v system,I fiited to my 34 and 33 both 6v,I used a cig lighter socket from the wreckers yard and insulated the mount, then wired up so the pos was to the centre terminal on the cig socket,it runs my garmin great, and charges my phone as well,

Pluck a no brainer, get the inverter on ebay for 60.00

One goes to the battery and one goes to one wire on the Cigarette lighter, the other wire from the cig lighter goes to ground. then you can hook up a cel phone, GPS or anything else you can think of, It takes a 12volt and allows it to be used on a 6 volt system. I run 2 of them and have them hidden away under the dash rail.

I place this behind the left kick panel so it is hidden all the time and place the lighter on each bolt of the dash rail where it bolts to the cowl, this way i have one for the driver and the passenger. I run the charge wire under the dash rail so it is not seen or hangs and use a Window Cel phone mount to keep it out of the way also.

Let me know if you need pics and i will take them for you

cheapskate solution.....

I looked all over for a reasonably priced converter before we went to French Lick. I would likely have bought one at $59 if they were available then, but was unwilling to spend $99-129 the parts vendors were asking.

I got a battery holder from Radio Shack online which holds 8 AA batteries (8 x 1.5 = 12v), wired it up to a cigarette lighter receptacle and good to go. less than $10.

on the trip north we discovered that leaving the Garmin plugged in 24hrs runs down the batteries even if the GPS is off. on the return trip we only plugged it in when needed, batteries were still good when we got home.
