Cast Iron Muncie Transmission for Model T ?

I was down at the "south 40" today trying to get my wife's young pup back after it chased some whitetail deer out of the apple orchard and couldn't quite remember how to get home --- Anyway, there I stumbled across a Model T rear end that I had apparently put there years ago. The rear end has a smallish Cast iron "Muncie" top loader transmission attached to the torque tube. Did Model T's ever come from the Ford factory with a Muncie ****** installed? What was the function/purpose of that transmission, and are they ever used today in restored cars? I have seen more of these small cast iron Muncie transmissions at a fellow old car guys' yard a time or two, but never saw one attached to a Model T car torque tube rear end before.

The short answer is no, it was never a factory option. But it was a popular aftermarket installation to give a choice of more than two forward gears. And yes, they're still found in some T's. My 1923 Fordor project has one.

Thanks for the pictures, Steve. Nice! I'll try to take and post a picture of the Muncie down at the South 40. It's shifter stick is not shaped like the one in your '23.
