Cast aluminum oil pan

so why would Ford go thru the expense of aluminum cast pans vs stamped steel?? Also - wouldn't the steel pan offer better protection against loss of oil due to an undercarriage hit? Steel dents - aluminum breaks?

I have a NOS V-8 60 37-39 one, just wondered if it is a prototype or not. As soon as I figure out how to post pics I will post some.

Remember, Ford had allot of production problems on the first V8 and the cast pan was a stop gap item until the stamped steel one was available. Or so I waz told.

In 1932 steel stamping was not as it is today.. Typically the steel needs lead added to it to do sever drawing.. Looking at the sump of an oil pan vs a flat sheet of steel would certainly fall into that area and could have been difficult to attain..
As Ron said a stop gap system until they got the stamping figured out.

Ford already knew how to stamp steel oil pans given those in use on Model As and Bs. Why it took 7 months after Job #1 to release the V-8 steel pan will likely remain a mystery.

There were aluminum pans on German and maybe French flatties too.

And a real neat finned aluminum hot rod pan was made way back when, and is now reproduced by Don Orosco.
