carburetor problem?

hey guys! was needing some input on my 28. I'm getting a miss/sputter at higher RPMs, I reset the timing and point gap, my Advance placement don't seem to matter, I've checked the plugs and the valve springs. could it be carburetor related? I'm thinking ill remove and soak it. could the condenser be the problem?

any help would be great!
thanks

Jim

Hi Jim,

Fuel filter?

Poor fuel flow at carburetor?

Anything in sediment bowl?

Bottom of fuel tank clean?

Few more details would help -- thanks.

A high speed miss-fire could very well be fuel related. It could also be ignition. What style distributor plate are you using ? How much play in the bushings ? Is coil polarity correct ?

here are the pics.. the blue wire is on the positive side.

Get rid of the red covers on the ends of your coil wire. They aren't necessary and can trap dirt and moisture or prevent the wire from fully seating, and thereby cause trouble. They probably aren't the cause of this problem, but later on could be.

I concur that the plugs should be gapped at .035.

Re: miss/sputter at higher rpm:

In no particular order:

1. Air/fuel mixture too lean:

a. Restricted fuel supply
(1) Plugged fuel filter (if installed)
(2) Gas cap not venting
(3) Plugged fuel tank outlet
(4) Carb float set too low
(5) Carb passage(s) restricted or plugged

b. Vacuum leak:
(1) Between carb and inlet manifold
(2) Between inlet manifold and block

2. Ignition:

a. Coil:
(1) Weak
(2) Polarity reversed

b. Distributor body:
(1) Rotor-to-body gap unequal
(2) Body cracked

c. Points:
(1) Not gapped correctly
(2) Corroded
(3) Spring weak or broken

d. Failed or weak condenser

e. Spark plugs:
(1) Incorrectly gapped
(2) Cracked insulator
(3) Fouled
(4) Wrong type or heat range

The coil polarity should be the same as the battery. If the system is 6v + grd then so should the coil/points. Drivers side terminal box wire should go to - side coil. + coil terminal wire should then go to switch which ends up at the points eventually. The website for the Chicago MG club has a description for spark flare.
I noticed your picture showed an Echlin coil. I'm wondering if its the correct coil. Also, oil coils don't like to be run upside down.
Your sparkler gap of .030" should be fine, they'll have less chance of a high speed mis-fire when gapped a bit closer than the recommended .035".

It's the coil that was in it when my dad bought the car, how can I make sure it's correct?
