Has anyone bought a after market carb Ford 1953 v8? I cant get anymore adjustment on the mixture. Are they good or just junk?

There are quite a few versions of this - some made by onshore based companies, some from China, etc.. You need to specify the carb model and who made it.

There is a thread on the H.A.M.B. which echoes what Dale said. The O/P was very satisfied with the particular brand he bought, while others had varying results. People tend to make blanket statements ("all imported carburetors are junk") that are not true. I believe that "GB Sisson" on this forum has had good results from imported replacement carbs on a Japanese vehicle.

You may want to check out the H.A.M.B. thread to find the best choice.

There are multiple reasons the fuel/air ratio can be wrong, and as many cures without replacing the carburetor. Tell us your symptoms and we can help.

It seems to run fairly smooth at idle but when I put a load on it, it misses real bad and will not smooth out with the air fuel mixture.

t seems to idle smooth but under a load misses bad. I've tried the air fuel mixture and it doesn't help. I can make it run worse but can't get it to smooth out.

The mixture screws on the back of the carburetor affect ONLY the idle. Nothing to do with acceleration. Various things may cause your problem, but as the above posters recommend, make sure your vacuum advance is connected and working.

Idle mixture screws are only going to adjust the idle mixture as stated . As soon as the throttle is opened they no longer have any possibility of changing the off idle performance

Check if you have the correct carb to mate with your 8 ba style distributor and make sure the vacuum unit is working correctly in the distributor. Also check the carb for the correct power valve .

I did put a one way valve in the line to keep gs from draining back. I'm starting to wonder if under load it's restricting gas.

“It ran fine with that carb before”. What did you do just “before” it began running poorly? Check the vacuum line between the carb and the distributor, as it may have been disconnected. Your idle screws will also need to be re-adjusted now to achieve a smooth idle.

If you can't adjust the air fuel mixture by turning the idle mixture screws 'in" and it won't kill the kille the engine that means you're gettinga leak from somewhere else. Start by taking a can of carb spray and spray around the intake and carb and see if see if the idle changes, Your looking for gasket leaks. If you don't find any than you probably have something plugged up in the carb which is really common. Take it apart and gentlly take the carb cleaner and blow out each passage. Reassemble the carb being careful not to strip out the fittings. Everything is fragile, you need to be careful with it. The idle mixture screw you want to lightly bottom out ( don't mix them up) and then open them n both 1 1/2 turns. Once the engine warms up you want to turn them in each a little at a time until the engine starts to slow and then back them out until it smooths out, both screws need to be exactly the same number of turns. If that's the original carb you want to keep it, it was calibrated to go with that engine. If you start changing carbs you're just going to create even more problems. Also before you rebuild it check the butterfly shaft to make sure does.nt have to much slop in it, if it does you might want to look for another carb.

Just an update. I bought vacuum gage this morning and set the mixture screws and took it out. It ran smooth, knock on wood.
