carb upgrade

Might be opening a can or worms here...but I am considering a carb upgrade to install over the winter down period for my 30 A. I requested prices for a Winfield...but do not know what advantages exist for the SRAU (with accelerator pump) opposed to the SAU(without). I am running a Snyder's 6.1 head and everything else is stock. Is there any advantage to a header while I am messing around with the manifolds. I don't want a lot of additional noise...but if it would increase power significantly I would add the Snyder's cast iron header as it seems to look stock. I really don't want to go with a Weber downdraft...looks to modern...and I do not want to add a fuel pump. Opinions????

Although it does look modern, I am very happy with my Weber and the aluminum manifold that comes with it.

The stock carburetors have restricted airflow at anything above 1,200 rpm. I don't know anything about the Winfield but check the airflow number and compare that to the stock carburetor. If you can find a carburetor with two barrels and progressive linkage that will work well. The first barrel will give you good response and performance for most driving and the second barrel will proved extra power when needed.

See if you can buy a Marvel carb, is an aftermarket carb for Model A's.
Next best would be an SU carb if you can find someone to make a manifold for it.

Winfield carbs are great, but expensive and a little harder to tune. I suggest a Stromberg 97. The Stromberg 81 is also good but the 97 will produce more power. Use stock jets.

The 'A' size Winfield is too small for the Model A. I ran a SCD for years and loved it.

I second the Marvel carb, and you can use a Model B intake manifold. Or "bore out" the vertical riser of a Model A intake manifold to equal or expand on the Model B.

"Port & Polish" will also do wonders but doing this yourself without experience might be a killer - the "edges" of the Model A stock valve seats are "thin" and its easy to overshoot.

Richard Knight (of this board occasionally) will tell about larger valves - but now we're getting a little beyond the query target.

There is a Winfield BB manifold on ebay for US$450.
Let us know the cost of a BB downdraught carb?
I think Winfield recommended a B for a standard engine, so a BB should be OK with higher compression.

The smallest and cheapest will be A size, and the biggest D, the most expensive.
The S can use gravity fuel feed, I believe, if the float has a G on it.
