Carb issues ?

I will try to give enough details sorry am a newbie

My 29 Tudor will always start cold , I do have some issues when I try to restart it after it gets warm, some times I think I flood the carb, looks like gas leaks out. I have to wait 30 min to start her again I don't choke when warm. Looks like fuel will leak out where the throttle shaft enters the side of the zenith or some times out the bottom opening fuel will drip .Im not sure if it flooding because I have to try 6 or 7 time to get her running or if the issue is the carb.

Also I notice when I'm driving and come to a stop , it seams the car is always idling a bit to high, when I adjust the throttle lever a bit lower is doesn't idle properly, a make a very small increase in the throttle and it's rpm seems to high.

I was thinking of taking the carb off this winter and having a rebuild from one of our club members , thanks in advance .I hope I explained the issue well enough. sorry if I didn't

Hi, I'm new here, too, helping a friend with a 1931 Model A Deluxe Roadster. I've only visited the vehicle once for an hour, it didn't start and fuel was dripping from the air filter. Studying one of the sites mentioned here, I learned about the "GAV" (Gas Adjusting Valve) and when I visit the car tomorrow, I'll be very surprised if it isn't opened 1+ turns. Apparently it is controlled by turning the choke knob. Perhaps yours is wide open, too?

It's fun to learn new stuff, isn't it! The heck old dogs can't learn new tricks!:D

I suspect you have a float valve leaking when the car is static. This could be fixed by installing a Viton tip float valve. Most suppliers carry them and they seal off better than the original float valve.

Whenever you suspect you have flooded the engine, there is no need to wait 30 minutes. Simply pull the throttle handle all the way down to open the butterfly. Keep the choke open. Crank the engine over. The open butterfly will allow a significant inrush of fresh air that will clear the flooding. Keep your hand on the throttle lever because when the engine lights off it will go to full race unless you quickly push the lever up.

if you have play in the throttle shaft, most old carbs do an oversize shaft is the fix. this will cause poor idle quality from a lean mixture and sticking throttle return. agree put a viton tip valve in also.

I agree with the other posts, one way to help with your problem until you get the carb rebuilt is to shut the gas tang valve off and let it run out of gas instead of just turning off the switch. (Do not forget to turn off the key or you can burn your points and destroy a coil if it is left on when the engine is not running) This way the carb is mostly empty and will not overflow causing hard starting. Just remember to turn the gas valve on a few seconds before you try to start it again.

All good info. But, a couple questions. Are you shutting off the fuel when you leave the car for awhile ? Where is the GAV set ? Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture ? Have you tried using just a tad of choke when restarting ?
All these monsters tend to be a bit different and sometimes it takes a few times to figure out what they like. If mine sits for more than about 15 minutes, it wants a little choke.

Thank you for all the help, I have been shutting the gas valve off and running the line dry. I found the time I didn't do that there was a lot of gas dripping out. I have my gav properly set . I think it won't hurt to rebuild the carb. I will let the guys at my club know what your recommendations are .thanks again .

Is this a Zenith or a Tillotson? Tillys are noted for being warped and causing various leaking troubles. Suggestions above are good if it's a Zenith.

No need to apologize for being a newbie. We all started out there! ;)
