Carb. Air Flow

Why does the Air Cleaner silencer say to place the closed portion to the front towards the fan instead of the open portion? It seems to me the more air down the Carb throat the better. I know if the cleaner gets dirty, thereby restricting air flow, fuel consumption increases. It may be that even though I'm nearly as old as the old ford engineers, I'm not nearly as smart.

These old carbs do their best when gathering air from a non-turbulent dead air space... You guys with multiple carbs & scoops should have the openings facing to the rear.
