I was not happy with the top speed of a recently purchased Tudor, so I started going over the engine hoping to find something obvious. In doing so I discovered that the throttle linkage (between the carb and the firewall) was bent to the point that the carburetor was only opening about 3/4 of the way. In other words, it was bent to the point that it wouldn't push the throttle butterfly fully open even if the gas pedal was pushed to the floor. After straightening the rod, the engine comes up to speed just fine, but of course, it now wants to idle too fast as the linkage is holding the throttle plate open slightly.
What am I missing here? Is there an adjustment somewhere that I don't see?
