Driving at night does not address the issue of what happens when you put on the brake. Driving at night with the brake up proves nothing. The best way to check if the brake is shorting the battery wire is to remove the floorboard, press down on the brake and see if it is hitting the wire to the starter, and also check to see if the wire is worn somewhere along its length because it may not hit on this precise time of testing. Then try the same thing with the engine running. If that is negative, with the engine running, check the brake switch by stepping on the brake. These things can and should be checked in your garage with the engine running but the car stationary. If the car only wants to die when you put on the brake you should be able to test things at home by simply putting on the brake and eliminating possibilities. After you check these things at home, if it only happens when you are on the road, move on to the other suggestions. Always try the easy things first.
